The Story Behind the Marketing Tree

Linda Reed-Enever

If you know me, you know there is one thing I say consistently to every client, student, and business owner I work with: I don’t believe in marketing funnels. I believe in trees.

After five years in the making, putting it on shelves, stepping away for other projects, and coming back to it, The Marketing Tree Method has officially launched! We celebrated the launch with a casual, informal night at Sophia’s, a beautiful full-circle location for me. It’s the very spot where I used to hang out during my university days, eating pizza and brainstorming big ideas with friends.

To be back there celebrating 21 years of marketing experience wrapped up in a book was a massive milestone.

Moving Away From the High-Pressure Funnel

Funnels are all about pushing people downward. They force people through a high-pressure sales process until only the narrowest group fits through the hole at the bottom. If that hole isn’t right for them, it’s never going to work. Worse yet, forcing people into a program or course they aren't ready for only results in an absolute mountain of customer service issues and unengaged users.

Think of it like an old Tupperware cupboard from the eighties or nineties. You open the door, and everything cluttering the space falls out all over the floor, the lids don’t match, and it’s just one giant, purposeless mess. That is what high-pressure marketing tactics feel like.

At the heart of my method is a simple manifesto: Funnels rush, but trees invite.

Empowering Your Audience with Choice

The Marketing Tree Method looks at your business as a living ecosystem. Everything starts with your soil. Your soil represents your thoughts, your core messages, your systems, and the environment in which you run your business.

If you plant a tree in bad soil or quicksand, you’re going to get a bad result. You have to get your soil right, build a strong trunk with your core brand message, and then let your campaign trees grow.

The whole idea is centred around empowering your audience to choose their own journey:

  • Seeds of Interest: You allow people to find what interests them and start climbing at their own pace.
  • Branches to Rest On: Just like a koala climbing a gum tree to reach the best leaves, your clients don't always climb straight to the top. They take their time, pause on a branch, and hang out until they are ready to move up.
  • An Interconnected Forest: If a branch gets big enough, it can grow into its own tree and become a brand-new offering, creating a scalable, living forest that works together for you.

I have a community member, Sarah, who sat on my newsletter list for two whole years before she ever bought anything from me. If I had followed traditional funnel rules, she would have been purged from my list long before then. Instead, she was empowered to opt in when she was ready, and that is how you build sustainable, long-term business growth.

Get Your Pens Ready!

The Marketing Tree Method wasn’t built on clinical whiteboard theory. It was grown through 21 years of real-world business experience, practice, patience, wins, flops, and breakthroughs.

Inside the book, you’ll find 2 core trees and 15 distinct campaign trees with real examples for each. Best of all, I intentionally designed the size of this book so you can open it up flat, grab a pen, write all over the pages, and draw your own forest. It is meant to be actively used, not to sit pretty on your desk!

Your Next Step

Stop trying to plant a whole forest by tomorrow morning. Look at your current business foundations.

Ask yourself: How do I talk about my business, and how do my clients talk about me? Tune your message, check your soil, and give your audience a clear invitation to take the next step with you.
