What Is PR
Linda Reed-Enever
Public Relations (PR) is all about connecting your business with the public. It’s about telling your story, building your brand, and sharing your message in ways that resonate with the media and your audience.

Every business, no matter its size, has a unique story to tell. Whether it’s an idea, a mission, or a vision, PR is about showcasing that story repeatedly, across various platforms, to ensure it reaches the right people.

At its core, great PR means telling your story well—at the right time, with the right tone, and to the right audience. While PR is mostly proactive, it can also be reactive, requiring quick thinking and adaptability when challenges arise.

The Expanding Role of PR in the Digital Age

Many businesses and organisations underestimate the true power of PR, often limiting it to media releases. However, PR is far more comprehensive and integral to a business’s success. It extends to social media, blogging, digital marketing, and more.

In today’s digital era, PR is about building connections, providing valuable information, and shaping the public’s perception of your business. It’s not just about what you say—it’s about how your audience feels about your brand and products.

Why PR Matters for Your Business

Your PR is the message you share, the stories your clients tell about you, and your overall reputation. It’s through these messages and your branding that the public decides whether they want to engage with your business.

In essence, PR is everything you do. From your social media posts to client communications, every interaction is part of your PR. This makes planning and strategy essential.

Proactive PR campaigns allow you to control your narrative, influencing how your clients and the public perceive your brand. Thoughtfully planned campaigns should be at the heart of every business strategy.

Are You Already Doing PR Without Realising?

Most businesses engage in PR daily without even realising it. Client emails, phone calls, sales letters, and social media interactions all contribute to your public relations efforts. What many businesses fail to do, however, is plan for these interactions.

After years of working in the industry, here’s my advice to business owners:

  1. Take a Step Back – Review your brand and define your key messages. What do you want people to know about your business?
  2. Identify Your Audience – Understand where your audience is and focus on connecting with them. You don’t need to reach everyone—just the people who matter most to your business.
  3. Share Your Story – Communicate consistently and authentically, ensuring your story aligns with your brand values and resonates with your audience.

In summary, PR is the foundation of your business’s reputation and success. By taking a proactive approach and telling your story effectively, you can build trust, foster connections, and ensure your message reaches the right people at the right time.
